“ Great book store with an adorable retro cafe, coffee, ice cream, and a whole vegan menu! Love that they carry Herbivorus Butcher vegan deli!! There is a stage towards the back of the book side for readings for small live music. ”
“ I didn't get food so can't speak to that, but I loved the atmosphere. Books and coffee are two of my favorite things. I got "The Raven" and it was delicious. The drinks are themed, and the book selection (new and used) is decent. Would go again next time I'm in DSM. ”

“ Perfect cafe in downtown Des Moines. Located amidst a bunch of cute shops and restaurants this cafe/book store has a cozy vibe with the tastiest treats. I can hear with some friends to hang out and read. We all ordered coffee, which was delicious, and then got some food as well. The service was fast and friendly, and the food was SO good. Would definitely come here again. There’s parking upfront. Big open space inside. Half is diner themed and half is books and casual coffee spot. In the back there is also a little room with additional books and games to play. I will be back! ”
“ The place has a ton of board games and great collection of books. The books are very unique, its a good place to hangout in a cozy section of the city. Lots of old buildings and shops around which add to the vibe. To top if off the coffee was awesome too! There was some live music going on when we visited. So not a lot of reading could be done, but music was nice upbeat! ”

“ I absolutely LOVE Plain Talk Books & Coffee! They are very community focused and look for different ways to engage people in the community and be involved with Des Moines - which is why I love a local bookstore. They have different groups, like local churches and nonprofits, community orgs, etc., that come in and use the spaces and I think it's wonderful how many different groups use the space even on a weekly basis. The food is great too! I personally always get the chickpea "tuna" sandwich and a coffee. They've got an amazing variety of drinks and food, books and everyone is always so very friendly whenever I'm in (which is often). I think they are a pillar in the community, so please support them and shop/buy local. Community spaces are so limited nowadays. Thank you to the amazing staff there!! ”
